Axolotl, that's me

I am the Axolotl and I have been around for 350 million years. I live to be about 15 years old, weigh only 60 to 200 g and grow to about 25cm long. With my protruding gill branches and my permanent smile, I look super cute. I like to eat small crustaceans, larvae and spawn from other amphibians. I was sacred to the Aztecs. I represented their god of death, Xolotl, from which I got my name. Translated, it means water monster.

I am something very special because I stay young forever. I stay my whole life in the larval stage and therefore cannot leave the water like other newts. But I can regrow entire limbs and and even organs, which makes me extremely interesting for science.

That's where I live

Where Mexico City is today, there was once Lake Texcoco. The lake no longer exists, so I now live in the canals and waters around the city. It's the only place I feel at home.

There are still that few of us

It's hard to say how many of us are left. In 2019, it was estimated that there are only 50 to 1000 left in the wild.

That's why we have problems

For one thing, my habitat is extremely limited. For another, carp and tilapia were released into the canals around 35 years ago. These invasive species have eaten us up and have almost wiped us out.

Our artist created a beautiful NFT that can be found and bought on our NFT marketplace. With every trade of our NFTs, a percentage is donated to the organizations who help the most in saving exactly these species!

The adorable Slow Loris is more than just our mascot. It's a symbol of the delicate beauty and vulnerability of all endangered species.
