That's me,

the Amur Leopard

I'm a subspecies of the leopard. My name comes from the Amur River in north-eastern China. I grow (with tail) about 2 meters long and have a shoulder height of about 65 to 80 cm. My weight varies from 25 to just under 50 kilos. In zoos I live to be about 20 years old in zoos, much less in the wild. My beautiful fur becomes about 5 cm long in winter so that it can keep me really warm. My summer coat is only about half as long, but is much more brightly colored more intensely colored than in winter. My prey includes Siberian musk deer musk deer, wild boar, moose and Siberian roe deer. If I find nothing else, I also hunt rabbits or even mice. My territory covers 50 to 300 square kilometers.

That's where I live

Amur leopards once lived in the north-east of China and on the Korean peninsula, perhaps even as far as Beijing. Today, the last surviving population lives in the extreme southwest of Russia in the Primorye region, 70% of which is now designated as a national park.

That's how few of us are left

After extensive conservation efforts, the number of Amur leopards is slowly increasing. The Leopardovy National Park is home to around 110 adult animals. In addition, there are animals living in zoos around the world. It is estimated that there are around 120 specimens here.

Why am I endangered?

Until the 1990s, poachers (illegal hunters) were a threat to us. Also our homeland was gradually degraded by unsustainable deforestation, forest fires, road building, agriculture and industrial development. Our numbers were so decimated that today inbreeding is a major problem for us. Deformities or infertility are the result.
